Morbid Curiosity Art Show Opening in the Cafe, Friday, June 4th at 7:00 pm -
The look of Morbid Curiosity magazine was defined by underground and
outsider artists. Drawing from punk rock collage, Goth fashion design,
and fine arts photography, the magazine's illustrators explored the
inevitability of decay, especially the beauty of the skull beneath the
skin. Morbid Curiosity editor Loren Rhoads has gathered prints,
photographs, collages, and original artwork to showcase her favorite
images from magazine and the book MORBID CURIOSITY CURES THE BLUES:
TRUE STORIES OF THE UNSAVORY, UNWISE, UNORTHODOX, AND UNUSUAL. Featured
artists include Dorian Katz, R. Samuel Klatchko, M. Parfitt, Erik
Quarry, Suzanne Dechnik, Mike Hunter, Chris Schnapp, Hugues Leblanc,
and Timothy Renner. Want a piece of Morbid Curiosity?
Artwork from the cult magazine Morbid Curiosity and the book MORBID
CURIOSITY CURES THE BLUES will be for sale in June at Borderlands
Cafe. Join us for the opening!
Sue Blalock, C.E. Grayson, and
K.T. Sparrow, contributors to DESTINATION: FUTURE (Hadley Rille, Trade
Paperback, $15.95) Saturday, June 12th at 3:00 pm - From the
publisher: "Called by Publishers Weekly an 'exceptional science fiction
anthology,' DESTINATION: FUTURE, edited by Z.S. Adani and Eric T.
Reynolds, is a collection of fantastic science fiction stories about
space travel, first contact, and other traditional science fiction
themes. This book includes stories from authors such as Elizabeth
Bear, Sue Blalock, Michael A. Burstein, Sara Genge, C.E. Grayson, James
Gunn, Sandra McDonald, K.D. Wentworth, Mike Resnick, K.T. Sparrow, Erin
Stocks, Caren Gussoff, and more." Come meet three of the authors,

stand-out anthology!
SF in SF presents authors
Deborah Grabien and Seanan McGuire at the Variety Preview Room (582
Market Street), Saturday, June 12th at 7:00 pm - We are very
excited to help SF in SF welcome these local authors, both of whom have
new works of urban fantasy! Each author will read a selection
from their work, followed by Q&A from the audience moderated by
author Terry Bisson. Authors will schmooze & sign books after
in the lounge. Books available for sale courtesy of Borderlands
Books. Seating is limited, so first come, first seated. Bar
proceeds benefit Variety Childrens Charity - learn more at <http://www.varietync.org/>.
We REALLY encourage you to take BART into the City, or use MUNI to get
here - parking can be problematic in San Francisco, to say the
least. We are less than one block away from the Montgomery St.
station. Trust us - you don't want to be looking for parking and
be late for the event! Phone (night of event) 415-572-1015.

David J. Williams, THE MACHINERY OF LIGHT (Spectra, Trade Paperback, $16.00) -
We're delighted to welcome David Williams back to the store for the
thrilling final book in the Autumn Rain trilogy! From the book
description: "September 26, 2110. 10:22 GMT. Following the
assassination of the American president, the generals who have seized
power initiate World War Three, launching a surprise attack against the
Eurasian Coalition's forces throughout the Earth-Moon system. Across
the orbits, tens of thousands of particle beams and lasers blast away
at one another. The goal: crush the other side's weaponry, paving the
way for nuclear bombardment of the cities. As inferno becomes
Armageddon, the rogue commando unit Autumn Rain embarks on one last
run. Matthew Sinclair, an imprisoned spymaster, plots his escape. And
his former protegee Claire Haskell, capable of hacking into both nets
and minds, is realizing that all her powers may merely be playing into
Sinclair's plans. For even as Claire evades the soldiers of East and
West amid carnage in the lunar tunnels, the surviving members of the
Rain converge upon the Moon, one step ahead of the Eurasian fleets but
one step behind the mastermind who created Autumn Rain -- and his
terrible final secret." Don't miss the opportunity to meet David
Williams and check out this exciting new novel.
Amelia Beamer, THE LOVING DEAD (Night Shade Books, Trade Paperback, $14.95) -
We're delighted (and perhaps a bit wary) to host an event for the debut
novel of Locus Magazine editor Amelia Beamer! From the publisher's
site: "Girls! Zombies! Zeppelins! If Chuck Palahniuk and Christopher
Moore had a zombie love child, it would look like THE LOVING DEAD, a
darkly comic debut novel by Amelia Beamer. Kate and Michael,
twenty-something housemates working at the same Trader Joe's
supermarket, are thoroughly screwed when people start turning into
zombies at their house party in the Oakland hills. The zombie plague is
a sexually transmitted disease, turning its victims into shambling,
horny, voracious killers after an incubation period where they become
increasingly promiscuous. Thrust into extremes by the unfolding
tragedy, Kate and Michael are forced to confront the decisions they've
made, and their fears of commitment, while trying to stay alive. Kate
tries to escape on a Zeppelin ride with her secret sugar daddy -- but
people keep turning into zombies, forcing her to fight for her life,
never mind the avalanche of trouble that develops from a few too many
innocent lies. Michael convinces Kate to meet him in the one place in
the Bay Area that's likely to be safe and secure from the zombie
hordes: Alcatraz. But can they stay human long enough?"
